Why do I need to test my cholesterol levels?
Interestingly, our liver makes all the cholesterol we need for building new cells, making hormones and producing Vitamin D. However, we also consume dietary cholesterol which is found in animal foods such as meat, eggs, dairy products and processed foods. When we consume too much dietary cholesterol, it impacts the cholesterol levels in our blood. This is especially significant if we consume foods that are high in 'bad' cholesterol - low density lipoproteins (LDL). Over time, LDL sticks to the walls of our blood vessels and arteries in the form of plaque. This plaque build up increases blood pressure as the arteries harden and become narrower . This puts us at a higher risk of stroke, heart disease and heart attacks.
Not all cholesterol is bad news. Omega oils are part of the good high-density lipoproteins (HDL) and this type of cholesterol actually helps remove unhealthy low density lipoproteins (LDL) from our blood stream. This is why a diet that is high in omega oils is recommended. Unfortunately HDL doesn't remove the plaque adhering to the walls of our veins, so it's important to keep monitoring our cholesterol levels.
So, when it comes to cholesterol, remember the following:
- Monitor your cholesterol levels as knowing this helps assess your risk
- Make lifestyle changes, such as following a healthy diet and exercising, to help improve your levels
- Control your cholesterol levels with help from your doctor if diet and lifestyle changes aren't enough
