The MultiCare IN meter is the ideal device for testing cholesterol, glucose and triglyceride levels in the comfort of your home.
It's important these levels are monitored as dangerous levels will impact on your health. By monitoring them, you can check if the medication you are on is working as it should and whether the lifestyle changes you have made, are making a difference.
This multi-functional meter is simple to use. Please read the instructions that come with the user manual before using this device.
Each type of test (cholesterol, triglyceride or glucose) requires a different chip to be inserted into the meter before the test strip is inserted. The chip tells the meter what will be tested and it ensures the meter is appropriately calibrated to receive the specific test strip. Each time a new pot of test strips is opened, you must use the chip that comes with that specific pot of test strips.
Once the chip is inserted into the side of the meter, select either 'M' (male) or 'F' (female) and 'A' (before a meal) or 'P' (after a meal). This will ensure results are accurate.
It requires a small blood sample; 8µL for the cholesterol and triglyceride strips and 0.5µL for the glucose strips.
It is very important that you obtain the blood sample correctly:
- Wash your hands thoroughly with hot soapy water to remove contaminants and to increase vasodilation and blood flow to the fingertips.
- Rinse your hands thoroughly and dry them properly with a clean paper towel to avoid contamination or dilution of the sample from wet hands.
- Avoid the use of disinfectants, hydrogen peroxide, or alcohol before pricking the finger.
- Discard the first drop of blood by wiping the site with a clean paper towel, and immediately obtain a second drop of blood on the fingertip. Be careful not to squeeze or ‘milk’ the fingertip near the puncture site to obtain the blood sample. If necessary, rather squeeze lower down near the base of the finger or the palm of the hand. If the fingertip is squeezed too close to the puncture, haemolysis will occur to the blood sample, which will skew the results.
- If the blood has struggled to come out and you have to squeeze again, it is better to repeat the puncture on a different finger. Use the other hand if having to redo a test.
- Use lancet needles of an appropriate diameter. Remember that you will need a decent size drop of blood, so if you have thicker skin or reduced blood flow in the fingertips, you may need a larger lancet to obtain an adequate blood sample.
- It is important that the sample must be obtained in one go. You cannot partially obtain a sample and then attempt to obtain more blood from the same puncture. The reason being that blood starts to clot upon exposure to air and the clotting mechanism may interfere with the result. Haemolysis will also interfere with the results as mentioned above.
Test results for cholesterol and triglyceride take 30 seconds and for glucose test results, it takes only 5 seconds.
To help you monitor and compare your levels, the meter has a 500 measurement memory which also records the date and time of when the measurement was taken.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Why should I monitor my cholesterol, glucose and triglyceride levels?
It's really important to monitor each of these things as if you have unhealthy levels of each, they can be a serious health risk. Also, if your levels are too high, there aren't always any symptoms so you may be completely unaware. As much as our bodies need cholesterol, too much of it in our blood can be fatal. It can prevent blood from flowing through the arteries so they become deprived of everything they need to function. This can lead to heart disease. Keeping track of glucose is important for diabetics or if you are at risk of developing diabetes. This is because high levels of glucose can lead to heart, vision and nerve problems.Triglycerides store unused calories which can lead to hardening of the arteries and increase the risk of stroke, heart disease and heart attacks. By monitoring these you can know if you need to take action to improve them.
Does the machine measure total cholesterol? Does it break it down for LDL and HDL?
Yes, the machine measures total cholesterol but it doesn't provide a reading for LDL or HDL.
